Activities

Interactive Chart~  I found a little egg one day and out hatched a _____.  What do you think I heard it say?_____

ABC Order ~ put these words in ABC order.  You can either make a worksheet or center game with these.  white, shell, egg, soft boiled, roll, dozen, yolk, sunny side up, crack, over easy ,hardboiled, scrambled, fried hen

All in the Family~  Pass out old nature magazines and have the children hunt for pictures of different egg-laying animals.  Then as a class, create a picture chart that classifies the animals according to their respective "families".

Venn Diagram~  pick two animals that hatch from an egg.  Have students brainstorm  ways that the animals are alike and different.

Rubber Egg~  Place a raw egg in a jar of vinegar.  Check it the next day.  The vinegar will make the egg shell soft.  This will lead to lots of discussions and observations.  Ask these questions. What are four words that tell how the egg feels.  What did the egg look like after you took it out of the vinegar?  Why is the shell of the egg important to the growing chick?  Have the children draw a picture of what they saw.

Egg Graph ~ Have the children graph their favorite way to eat an egg.

Surprise Egg ~ Send home a plastic egg with each student.  Have the children fill the egg with something.  Also send a sheet for them to write three clues about what is in their egg. I usually send the clue sheet and egg in a zip bag.  The children love this activity

What's Hatched Today?  I  take 5 pictures of  different animals that hatch from eggs.  I put each  picture in an envelope and write 3 clues about what is in the envelope.  We do this each morning during our morning time

TLC has a wonderful book called "The Egg Book"

The Baby Uggs Are Hatching.  This is poem by Jack Prelutsky.  Read the poem to the children.  Ask them to create their own critter and poem.  Make an outline of a cracked egg for each child.  They can use this to make their ugg hatch.

What Hatches from Eggs.  Read the book "Chickens Aren't the Only Ones.  Have each student draw a different type of egg on one sheet and the animal that belongs in it on another sheet.  Staple the egg over the animal and create a bulletin board.

Mystery Eggs ~ Collect plastic eggs.  Fill the eggs with beans, corn, rice, etc.  The children shake the eggs to try to guess the contents.  Students may weigh the eggs on a simple balance scale.  The eggs can be arranged from the lightest to the heaviest.

Hard-boiled or raw?  Have students spin a raw egg and a hard boiled egg.  The hard boiled egg will spin longer.

Raw egg float ~ Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of water.  Add  1 tablespoon salt and stir constantly until dissolved.  Carefully add the egg into the glass and watch it float on the salt water

The color of the egg shell depends on the breed of the hen.
The egg shell may have as many as 17,000 tiny pores over its surface.
The color of the egg white depends upon the presence of carbon dioxide.
The color of the egg yolk depends on the hen's diet.

A hen requires 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg.  Thirty minutes later, she starts all over again.
