Activities

Read the Hating Book by Charlotte Zolotow.  Brain storm words from the story.  Exp... angry, hurt, worried. Have the children choose a partner and tell about times with a friend when they had those feelings.

Read the book Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber and Corduroy by Don Freeman.  Make a Venn Diagram  comparing Ira and Lisa,  compare the bears, or compare the two stories.

My Friends Book.  After discussing the concept "friendship", a "My Friends" book will give students an opportunity to tell about their friends.

Framed Feelings- Explain to the class that you want them to draw a picture in a frame showing how they can make a friend feel happy.  After they draw the picture, have them write 2-3 sentences to explain their picture.  Give the children the writing paper that the top is blank and the bottom has writing lines.

Secret Pals - Have each child choose a secret pal.  Tell them that for one week, they should do something nice for that pal, each day.  At the end of the week, reveal the secret pals.

Name poems- Have all the students exchange names.  Ask them to write the person's name long ways, on the paper. Using the first letter of each line, have them write a poem about that person.

Class Autograph Book- Every child in class can be included in this activity by creating just one book. Write one child's name boldly at the top of each page.  Students can write positive comments about each student.

Be a  Friend Poster - give each child a piece of tag board,  have them list things they should tell their friends when they are being nice

I am a Friend mobile- Cut one large oval for each child out of poster board.  Make four other shapes to go with this.  On each of the four shapes print--animals, family, friends, community.   Have them list things they do for these people to be a friend to them.

Friends Across the Wall - give each child an outline of a hand with wrist.  Tell them to pick a friend.  Write the name on the wrist.  On each finger write a  word about their friend.  Place hands touching each other up around the room.

Friendship Wheel - Divide circles into 4 pieces.  Glue picture of each child in the middle.  Have them draw/write how you or your friend help each other
