Welcome to our celebration of Winter.  We

have read books, written snow poems, made

snowmen, and learned about animals that

hibernate.  We hope you enjoy reading about our

 unit.

Eskimo Pie Graph

We had a great time with our Eskimo Pie graph.  Everyone estimated how many

bites they thought it would take to eat an Eskimo pie.  We also estimated how long

we thought it would take.  The children made tally marks of all their bites.  We

compared their guess with the actual amount.  They also measured how long their

popsicle stick was.  We then made an Eskimo pie paper popsicle with each

individual set of statistics on it.  It was a great and fun activity.  This idea came

 from Aims.

We designed mittens and graphed our favorite

color.  Below is a picture of our graph and an example

of the mittens the children made.

Activities

  1. Make a bird feeder with a pine cone, peanut butter, and bird seed.  Hang it from a  tree limb with fishing line.

 2. Snowman poem- Use  ABC Teach form with the word snowman going diagonally.  The children write a line on each row beginning with a letter from snowman.  Ex.  Snowmen are neat.

 3. Snowman Similes-    Use form from ABC Teach and fill in similes about snowmen.

 4.  Brainstorm a list of snow-related words.  Use the list for spelling words, writing poetry, writing and telling stories.  ABC Teach has snow theme writing paper.

 5.  Real Crystal Snowflakes- Make real crystal snowflakes from borax and pipe cleaners.  Directions on Enchanted Learning.

 6.  Winter Out Our Window.  Have children make snow scenes on blue construction paper using chalk.  Have pre-cut strips of black construction paper for the children to glue around the edge of their paper.  They also put two strips across the paper in a cross shape to make it look like a window.

 7.  Have a snowball  fight inside classroom.  Take a bag of marshmallows and have children count how many.  Divide   the class into two teams.  There are three rules that they have to follow-- 1. Don't throw hard.  2.  Don't climb to get a marshmallow.  3.  Don't eat any.   Set a timer to start.  After timer rings, gather all the marshmallows and count to see if any are missing.  Have an extra bag for the children to eat and enjoy.  An alternative to this would be to use cottonballs.

 8.  In the past our 1-2 teachers have done a "Snowed in at school day."  The children came dressed in their pajamas.  Each teacher was responsible for a snow activity and to read a book that went along with this book.  Our children loved this day.
